A cladding-and-lift trim package that Subaru credits with saving the company.

Facing slumping mid-1990s sales and no SUV entrant but no budget for an all-new vehicle, Subaru of America added body cladding and a suspension lift to the existing Legacy wagon and named the result the Legacy Outback, debuting at the 1994 New York Auto Show as a Premium trim on the base Legacy L wagon for the 1995 model year. Actor Paul Hogan (of Crocodile Dundee fame) fronted the US marketing to sell the Australian-outback association. Then-SVP Tim Mahoney's own words, quoted in a 2008 retrospective: 'it saved our company.'

Scope

US-launched trim package on the second-generation Legacy wagon, not yet a separate model; Australia adopted the shortened 'Outback' name at its 1996 launch, while the US shortened 'Legacy Outback' to plain 'Outback' by 1997.

Trims and transmissions

A related but distinct nameplate — the Impreza-based 'Outback Sport' (1996 New York Auto Show debut) — should not be confused with this Legacy-based Outback; they share a sub-brand name but belong to different vehicle families.

Identification and ownership notes

This generation's chassis is shared with the contemporaneous second-generation Legacy (BD sedan-adjacent trim / BG wagon) — it is not a dedicated Outback platform.
